Notes from Vox: Why Gay Marriage Might be Good News for the Church

Challenging Hypocrisy, Repentance, and Culture War Fatigue

Mike Erre / Andy Lara Link to the Episode

Here’s some of what Mike talked about in this episode:

Mike mostly monologued in this episode, it was the very first. You can see hints of what he’s after in making the podcast, which started as the “Vox, the Mike Erre podcast” or something like it. Some context that I think I was missing is that this episode aired around when gay marriage became legal in the US which is weird to think about that happening in my life time and more, about 10 years ago.

But he gets into the fact that with the passing of gay marriage in the US as being legal, that Christians can stop trusting in the supreme court to fight their battles, they will have to face their own hypocrisy in regards to divorce, pornography, extramarital sex etc. versus gay marriage. Why is homosexuality unusually singled out in the Church? When you find out someone is divorced, does that matter or not in regards to their faith, do you even care to ask? And if not, why not.

I think Mike is also hopeful that by losing the cultural war, that the Christian church can start to focus on loving others better instead of winning battles.

I keep having the thought about how hopeful Mike is, back from 2015/2016 that we are done with cultural battles in the Christian church. He didn’t see then how weaponized it would become, or maybe has always been. These early episodes have significantly more variation than the episodes that I’ve listened to that are recent, this first one was almost 30 minutes, but I expect a current episode to be over an hour.
